The Lismore Swans stood strong in Saturday's match to hold off Bond Uni in an excellent game of football at Oaks Oval. The Swans knowing the importance of this match dug deep to battle out a 20 point win in a very close finishing match.
The Swans looked in trouble in the first term as Bond started very strongly with the first 2 goals of the match and repeatedly drove the ball forward putting much pressure on the Swans backline. Angus Legoe led the Swans defence closely assisted by Chris Fielder in his first match of the season to hold the Swans to just a 11 point deficit at the first break.
The Swans switched their game on in the second term with midfielders Scott Brown and Rhys Lavery dominating through the centre of the field to kick 7 goals to 1 in the second term. The Swans moved the ball very well out of the backline and into the forward line to take out a 2 goal lead into half time.
Lismore continued to work hard in the third term with some big strong marks up forward by Jak Johnston, some excellent rucking by Jason Bevan and some solid football by Tom Merrett. The home side positioned well at three quarter time with a 17 point lead.
Bond Uni hit back hard in the final term kicking the first 2 goals of the term and bringing the margin within just 4 points. The Swans were looking vulnerable as they did a fortnight earlier when Tweed ran over them however Lismore were not about to lay down. Some excellent passages resulted in the ball being driven long to the top of the goal square where full forward Dean Webb beat 3 Bond players to snap goal and followed with another minutes later to put the team back on track and settle the side. In the end the Swans held strong to defeat Bond Uni by 20 points.
Best on the day were Scott Brown, Angus Legoe, Rhys Lavery, Chris Fielder, Jason Bevan, and Tom Merrett.
3 goals each were kicked by Dean Webb and Jak Johnston, 2 each went to Scott Brown and George Massa while singles were kicked by Wesley Seewald and Jason Bevan.
Lismore 2.3 7.6 9.11 12.13-85
Bond 4.4 5.6 6.12 8.17-65
