There's a distinct buzz around the Lismore Swans Australian Rules Football club.
Could it be the excitement of a resurgent Aussie cricket team? Could it be the air of expectation as players return from Christmas holidays ready to burn the paddock? Could it be the prospects of more Karaoke with Kyle at the Richmond Hotel?
According to Senior Coach Joe Mitchell, it's both of these things, and more. "There's been a great vibe among the boys who have turned up to train this year and already we remember why it is that we love our footy. Naturally, we're always keen for new members to join our ranks and players of all skill and ability levels are welcome'.
While the miles are being run into the legs and the pushups exerted upon the turf, the Swans have been busy building a presence off the field as well. According to club President Wes Seewald, "We've set ourselves the goal this year of becoming a truly family orientated club with a commitment to supporting our local community. As part of this initiative, the Swans have been working with local council and community groups to remove graffiti and have registered as a 'good sports' club with the Australian Drug foundation."
With a preseason tournament in South East Queensland and the Samson Fitness Challenge in early March, the Swans certainly have their work cut out in the weeks ahead. If you would like to try your hand (or perhaps your foot) at kicking a sherrin footy and seeing what the hype is about, come down to Mortimer oval in the Lismore CBD any Wednesday or Friday evening from 5:30pm.
You'll be most welcome.
