In a fantastic atmosphere of inter club spirit and participation, the Ballina Bombers AFC hosted the Swannies in a 'legends game' to raise money for the 'Breast Friends' cancer support charity and to celebrate 30 years of community footy in the Northern Rivers. By the days end, over $800 had been raised for the cause.
Featuring players aging from 20 years to 74 years in age, the legends match was played in a festive spirit with many laughs as torrential rain made the pink footy a bar of soap. The Lismore side was competitive, bolstered with recruits from the Nimbin Demons, however the Ballina Legends proved too strong in the end, running away with the win and taking home the inaugural 'golden boot'.
According to Lismore Swans Full Forward Phil Tsourlinis, the game was certainly worth getting a bit muddy. 'I couldn't really see much out their with all the rain, so I think I only got one kick for the day. But I did spoil the ball a couple of times and that made my day'.
The Senior game was a tough slog, with the Lismore Swans getting over the line in a shoot-out: 0.7.7 to 3.7.25
Lismore Swans were well served by their usual brigade, with captain Scott Brown inspirational in the heavy conditions. 'I'm very excited by our big win today' Brown commented after the game.
While the win was encouraging, the Swans know they still have an uphill battle from here, facing off against Ballina again next week in an elimination final at Bond University football ground on Saturday August 23 at 12pm.
