The resurgence of the men in red and white continued on Saturday with the Lismore Swans triumphing against the Ballina Bombers in an almost underwater QAFA (B) South Qualifying final at Bond University oval. The final score of 4.6.30 to 1.7.13 is testimony to the heavy conditions in which the match was played with both sides finding scoring difficult.
It was hard to pick a best on ground for the Swans in a solid four quarter team effort, with the side peaking at the right time of the year. According to Swans Vice Captain Angus Legoe, the team effort was insipred by a growing belief among the playing group that they have what it takes to knock off the top sides.
"We've been playing some really great footy of late, winning our last three games leading up to our finals clash with Ballina so there was definitely a real belief coming into the game that we could get the job done."
Legoe was inspirational for the Swans on the half forward line and was well fed from midfielders Tom Merrett and Scott Brown. The back six were also in fine form, with Michael Brown and Paul Blain repelling numerous Bomber offensives.
While the performance warmed the hearts of Swans fans of old, the win was no less sweet for Swans star recruit Josh McGuinness. The firey midfielder, quickly becoming a club favorite, was again dominant for his new club and is thrilled with the opportunity to play off for a grand final against.
"Our commitment to eachother and our club on Saturday was just awesome. Just getting to the finals meant so much for so many in the club, to have come home with a win is just the greatest. We've really got it sorted on the field at the right time of the year and the atmosphere around the place is buzzing."
The Swans will rest on Tuesday evening to reset before their clash with the Tweed Coast Tigers at Ballina this Saturday 24 August at 2pm.
Cheer Cheer!
