Sunday 12th May saw the fourth win from four outings for the Zillmere Eagles’ women’s team, cementing their spot atop the SEQAFL Women’s League ladder. The 23-18-156 to 1-1-7 win against newcomers Caboolture takes the Eagles’ scoring total to 407 so far this season with a meagre 74 points kicked against them in all 4 matches. That equates to a percentage of 550- some 300 percentage points ahead of defending premiers Yeronga.
Coach Geoff Webster noted the team effort that resulted in such a convincing win.
“The highlights of the game were numerous but to mention a few: Ash Hales’ repeated running with multiple phases from deep in the half back line right through and finishing it off by running into an open goal was a standout,” he said. “Jen Kelly’s hard shepherd to an opponent was a textbook hit. Nicole Geddes’ and Sharni Webb’s speed, Yo’s hard running and Teegs’ impeccable midfield play were many positives to come from this game.”
After a slow-ish start to the game where Caboolture were matching the Eagles in parts, the Eagles running power started to get on top. Caboolture’s only 2 scores for the match came in the first quarter, with the Eagles going into quarter time 4-3-27 to 1-1-7 up.
The second quarter saw the Eagles open up the game and with superior running power, took control with an eight goal to nothing quarter. While the midfield was running hard, Kristie Hudson was providing a powerful target up forward with strong leading. The Lions started to tire badly as the Eagles’ match fitness proved stronger.
The third quarter was a continuation of the second, although Caboolture were content to send numbers into the Eagles’ forward line to block off the repeated attacks coming in. This had some affect to congest the forward 50, but plenty of on-field talk, a wide open forward line and a swiftly positioned ‘zone’ enabled the Eagles to add another 7 goals to the scoreboard in the third quarter.
With the final quarter underway, stand-in ruck Sharni Webb provided impeccably positioned hit-outs time after time for the midfield to run on and consistently deliver the ball to the forwards with precision. The last four goals from the final term left the side with 11 individual goal kickers for the match- a display of the outstanding depth and talent of the team. The linking and running of the midfield and dependable structure of the forward line were testaments to the fact that every member of the team played their role in this resounding win.
Zillmere now turns their attention to the much anticipated grand final rematch this coming weekend. The showdown at Leyshon Park at 10am on Saturday will be the first time the Eagles see the reigning premiers (Yeronga) on the paddock since their disappointing 2012 grand final loss to the Devils. Whilst the Devils are rumoured to be a significantly different side to the seasons of their back-to-back grand final victories, the Eagles are not taking any chances, attempting to name their strongest side this year. The match is being played as a curtain raiser to Yeronga’s division two men’s teams’ matches and promises to be an inspirational display of footy.
