Under 18s
The playing group looked great in their club off-field dress and it set the
tone for the night of ceremony. Coach Al Lawson, who has stuck up the hand
again, classically summed up the season as one of ‘two halves’ and made the
important point that 32 of the 38 strong list will have a second year in the
u/18s in 2011. Al stressed the value of the volunteers and directly thanked
Dave Campbell, Lloyd Kavic, Terry Barnard and Fred Woblers for their cash and
kind inputs.
Votes
Votes were cast by the coach who had 17 votes per round with a max of 5 to any
one player. Twenty six players polled votes and in a one vote difference finish,
Shae Killey (24) squeaked SOS on 23 who by the way racked up 12 games in the
Magoos. Darcy Dienjes on 21 and Josh Kolka 20 followed. Those boys had 3 and 2
games respectively in the Magoos as well. Full vote list below.

Magoos
Coach Chants referred to the challenges in fielding a side week-by-week. A
total of 72 players took the field for the Magoos this season. Many a Friday
night was spent by Chants racking up phone bills chasing individuals and
casting nets far and wide to recruit personnel. It’s easy to forget that type
of effort to maintain the professional image of the footy club and no-one had a
harder gig at the club this year. To keep on keeping on requires some personal
traits that Chants has in spades. GA, Briggsy, Bulldog, and Travis Johnson were
acknowledged by Chants as assistants extraordinaire, and he also thanked Smithy
for inputs that spilled into his personal and professional life. True gentleman
that he is, he chose not to mention his premiership win with Surfers Old Boys.
Votes
Votes were cast by the coach who had 17 votes per round with a max of 3 to any
one player. In a count that
suggests some excitement for the future, 92 of 283 votes cast (32%) went to
under 18 and 16 players while two under sixteen players, Andrew Boston and Tom Davidson,
pulled the max in rounds 16 and 18. In the memorable victory in the penultimate round max votes
were recorded by Trent Arthur, Nathan Lyons and Jaran Pantic. And thank you
Hamish Dick. Dick headed up the first three rounds but came too early - he had to return to Melb after round
three.
In another tight count, under 18 player Mitch Kavic (15), pipped Dan
Skrinis (14) by one vote. (Mitch
also polled 5 votes in the u/18s) Both polled in 7 of the 9 and 10 games played
respectively. They were followed by a group of four on 13 votes, all of whom
scored in 5 of their games: Liam Frawley (5 games), Pat Squire and Glenn Ryan
(7 games), and Ash Palmer (8 games), and all spent significant time in the
seniors. Squire Pat may be returning to the west? Mention should also be made
of the Ox, Adam Oehlman, who accrued 10 votes in 5 of the 10 games he played in
the twos, and then put in 8 straight in the ones for 7 votes to finish off the
season. The leading 26 of the 45 who polled votes are listed. A full list is

Seniors
Triple Best and Fairest Dane Zorko. Rolls off the tongue but it was closer
than many good judges predicted. Talented artist, plasterer and almost Carlton
footballer, Jesse Derrick took it right up to Tinka. Throw in Stewie with only
12 games, brilliant seasons by Nathan Quick and Josh Searl, and you have a
leading list that the SUNS will ignore at their own peril. All five plus
Michael Cooke played rep football this season, and while we would like to see
them achieve at the highest levels, we will not be upset if they are left alone
- for the moment anyway. Whatever, not enough superlatives for Tinka's performance.
Votes
Thirty eight of the 45 listed players polled votes. As an indicator to
where the play was in our games, the backs polled 113 (44.1%) votes to outdo
the traditional vote magnets the midfielders/onballers who scored 111 (43.3%) It also suggests that the
coach allocated his votes on ‘jobs done’? And had little relevance to those listed
in the best on a weekly basis. Eg Tinka appeared 11 times as against JD who
notched up only 4 listings.
For interests sake and on our arithmetic, GCFC players attracted 21 (8.2%) votes; first year players
exclusive of GCFC received a telltale 35 (13.7%) votes with R-Pants picking up 18 of those;
and the Rolfes finished with 29 (11.3%). The experienced group - defined as 50
plus games – totalled 80 votes leaving 176 (69%) won by blokes still
learning the caper at Broady.
Korey Fulton failed for the first time in 10 seasons(?) not to pick up
the goal kicking award – running second with 31 - but from where we stand he was a huge plus as a versatile player
and role model, even at his gargantuan age. Tinka took out that award by one
goal in an on-baller/small forward role and collected 12 of his 32 in one
brilliant outing against the Maggies. Cookie, appropriately, ran third with
30.
The side was well led by
co-captains Fifey, and umpires mate Tinka, with Stewie emerging as an
on-and-off ground leader. Both Tinka and Stewie picked up awards (see below)
and we graciously offer Fifey a post ceremony gong for the best swannies
supporter captain.
The leading 26 are listed with full votes available below as a ppt
