As we enter the 40th year of the club’s existence it is sobering to appreciate that Bob has been involved for 17 of those years as Board member, President of Juniors and Seniors and the Licensed Club during torrid times, supporter, timekeeper, interchange steward, canteen worker, groundsman, Club Development Manager, husband of Maree, (supporter, Board member, general dogsbody, secretary/treasurer,…. you name it), and sire of Ben and Sam, both players extraordinaire.
Following an illustrious career with Romsey, Bob, affectionately known as ‘Piggy’ for reasons unknown to all but a close few at the Melbourne FC, enjoyed a playing career with the Demons and if it were not for a serious knee injury, and unconsciousness (particularly one at the hands of Port Adelaide), would have gone on to better, maybe even great things. He did after all hold down a key position alongside the likes of Brent ‘Tiger’ Creswell and picked up a bag of 9 in an afternoon’s work on the MCG. We think he was the last to achieve this feat for the Red Legs. And according to Tiger, he was certainly the second last inside the sheds after a tan run!
After plying his footballer and publican trade around Victoria, the Walters family made the move north. As parents of players, Bob and Maree took on every possible duty as volunteers for both seniors and juniors, and at one stage simultaneously held President and Secretarial positions of the Juniors. Later, Bob accepted employment within AFL ranks and took up his current position of CDM to the BBFC in November 2005. He has continued a dual role as CDM and undercover subversive agent to negate the influence of Southport until recent health issues forced an unwelcome decision.
Bob’s volunteer and professional contributions to the Broadbeach FC and to aussie rules development in Queensland will long be remembered. He has been an outstanding servant to the club and the Board thanks him sincerely for his lifetime of service and wishes him all the best for the future, in particular his health. He leaves us as a life member and good reason to celebrate our 40th year. We hope to see Piggy and family around the Cats for many seasons to come.
Should there be a CDM appointment for the Team of the First Forty Years, Bob is a shoe-in.
