Game 1. Broadbeach v Scorpions (Half of the Queensland under 18 squad)
Final Scores: Broadbeach 10 7 67 d Scorpions 4 1 25
Goals: Hooper 3, Rolfe T 2, and 1 each to Campbell, Goodheer, Corea, McKenzie and Hansen
Our first hitout other than an intra club game. The squad was handpicked to reflect a number of coaching criteria and captained by Squiz Rolfe who won the toss against younger brother Jackson skippering the opposition. Disappointingly, we lost Hands Hales to what appeared to be a left shoulder injury. Hales had been prominent and in one play was super quick with his 'Chinese Fans' to Macca to Hoops for one of his 3 goals. Nick Brown showed a left foot we haven't seen before with a good ball centred from the grandstand flank, resulting in a sausage roll. Others to stand out for us were Squiz picking up possessions around the ground, Ben Williams with pace off the half back who was happy to finish a game of sorts given his 2010 annus horribilus, Macca with long pushes into the forward 50 and Karl D'Orazio with some good work around the flanks both in the air and on the deck. Good trial in trying conditions. Happily, Knuckles Emery had applied the 50 strength protection oil while watching from the boundary, waiting for the second game.
Game 2: Broadbeach v Suns
Final scores: Broadbeach 3 4 22 drew Suns 3 4 22
Goals: Zorko 2, Hopper 1
Could have been a side in a home and away game. An injury here, some form there, and all could be selected in the seniors in 2011. The important thing from our point of view was that none looked out of place in a fast, entertaining game of footy. Clearly well prepared by Foxy, the boys were up and about in the fitness department, and given it was the first time they had played together in a competitive environment, we were able to exhale the nervous intake of breath early on in the piece. This season, we are in it with a go. We won strategically with the Suns having to play to our game. First blood in terms of goals went to them, but in the style of a good team, we responded immediately with a chain play from the centre bounce, initiated by Azza's courage, continued by the brains of Nathan Lyons who put the ball into the hot spot for Hoops to rove a ground ball from Knuckle's Emery's hands. Cookie showed great courage in a marking duel, and he got up first, and R - Pants was active down under and dirty and off the boot to forwards presenting themselves. Unfair to pick out just the few. Suffice to say we are Mum on Tinka. His 2 goals off the right foot were classic and he looks set for a great season rubbing Suns' noses in it. But all looked good. The journey continues and everybody who ran out in a Broady jumper today is still on the voyage.
