Hi everyone I’m Cameron Stevenson AKA Camo AKA Stevo and I’ve been asked to give a bit of an insight into what’s been happening for me footy-wise with the State U18s, Lions Reserves and UQ.
To provide a bit of background to all of this I played my junior footy on the Sunshine Coast and still consider myself a Sunny Coast boy at heart although now living in Brisbane.
Maroochydore is my home club and I played in a few Suncoast Power Development sides as well over the years.
In February this year I moved down to Brisbane to study physiotherapy and play footy for the University of Queensland Red Lions.
Over the Summer I trained with the Brisbane Lions Academy and was fortunate enough to be selected in the Queensland U18 State Squad.
Recently I’ve been lucky enough to play as a top up player for the Brisbane Lions Reserves side in the NEAFL.
Playing on the Gabba against the Swans and at Metricon against the Suns provided a huge buzz.
These games have been a great experience and has taught me that even listed AFL players have areas they need to work on every week.
What I take from this is that players should never see themselves as a finished product, they must have a desire to improve essential at every level.
Last weekend I travelled to Melbourne with the U18 State Team to play against the ladder leading Oakleigh Chargers, to play in the TAC Cup which widely recognised as the best U18 competition in the country.
I played midfield and rotated to half forward throughout the game.
For our side, captain Darcy Cameron-Reeves was excellent, taking a few highlight grabs going back with flight.
Sunshine Coast player and good mate Daniel Henderson gave a strong performance in defense, collecting 17 possession and five marks earning him a spot in the best players list.
Will Kristelly, another fellow Sunshine Coaster, continued his return from a finger injury, amassing 25 hit outs in the ruck.
Unfortunately, after matching the Chargers for most of the game and even hitting the front early in the last quarter, they showed their class to kick 10 goals straight to run out victors by 59 points 15. 17. 107 to 7.6.48.
The group took a lot out of the game with the main message of Wednesday night’s game review being that lapses against good sides will cost you!
Our performances in these games are important as we try to go about changing the perception that Queenslanders can’t match the boys in the southern states so we will be rearing to go for our next TAC cup game in a few weeks’ time against the Sandringham Dragons (Saturday May 3 on the Gold Coast).
On the weekend just gone I played for the Lions against Aspley where we got a good win, 15.13.103 to 12.8.80.
I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend!
