After a tortuous pre-season and 18-round Home & Away season, Finals Footy is upon us. All of the Roos senior club teams will be in action this weekend with the Seniors clashing with heavyweights Mayne; the reserves taking on Caloundra in a do or die clash; the Colts playing off for a spot in the Grand Final while the thirds are actually already there.
QFA North Seniors
Mayne V Maroochydore – Semi Final 2. Saturday 2.30pm. Mott St, Everton Park.
It’s 1st versus 2nd with the winner getting straight entry into the Big Dance and the loser to get another crack at it next week. For the second year in a row Mayne have secured the minor premiership however unlike last year they have suffered a couple of losses along the way- both at the hands of the Roos- which showed the competition they can be beaten.
Mayne have been the standout side for the past two years and deservedly go into the finals series as favourite to go back-to-back however the competition now knows they can be beaten…. It’s just a matter of they will be beaten when it matters.
Noosa V Caloundra – Semi Final 1. Saturday 2.30pm. Weyba Rd, Noosa.
Noosa had some big name recruits in the off season in former AFL players Robert Copeland and Brent Moloney who are both not short of big game experience. Copeland has been a standout all season and will be up there in league medal calculations while Moloney has suffered a few injury setbacks but looks to be in great touch come the business end of the year.
While Noosa will go into the clash as favourites, Caloundra should not be written off. The Panthers had a slow start to the year however have showed some form in the second half of the season having knocked off Maroochydore and forcing Noosa to come from a behind in a nailbiter just afew weeks back.
The loser of this clash will begin plans for mad Monday while the winner will face the loser of the second semi..
QFA North Reserves
Roos V Caloundra – Semi Final 1. Saturday Noon. Weyba Rd, Noosa.
No double chance for the Roos in this clash with the loser to pack their boots away for the year. The two sides have split the points in their clashes during the season – Caloundra getting up by 5 points in round 4, while Maroochydore ran out 28 point winners in round 11.
Mayne V Noosa – Semi Final 2. Saturday Noon. Mott St, Everton Park.
Easily the two top teams of the season with only percentage (in Mayne’s favour) separating their first and second spots on the ladder. The two sides clashed 3 times through the season with Mayne taking the points in the first two but Noosa reversing the result in the last clash.
ALFQ Colts North
Roos V UQ – Preliminary Final. Saturday 2pm. Moreton Bay Central Sports Comlex, Burpengary.
The Roos came back down to earth with a thud last week with a rampaging Aspley outfit running out 110 point winners to lock away that first GF spot. Fortunately the Roo boys had earned themselves a double chance and will face off with University to earn the final GF spot.
Inaccurate goalkicking cost the Roos a victory when the two sides met in round 1 however they ran out 6 goal winners when they met in round 11.
There’s no next week for the loser of this clash.
QFA B North
Gympie V Maroochydore. Saturday 2pm. Pomona AFC.
This will be the 6th time the two sides will have faced each other this season. Maroochydore took home the four points in round two however it has been Gympie in the four clashes they’ve had since … the latest being in the Second Semi Final two weeks ago.
The two clubs have clearly been the two best sides of the season with four and a half wins between the second placed Roos and the 3rd placed Pomona (Gympie were two wins ahead of Maroochy).
It has been a remarkable turnaround for Gympie who have struggled in seasons past. However are a formidable and respected unit under new coach Brent Forsyth.
The Roos, however, are hoping to go one better this year after losing last year’s Grand Final to Bribie.
