Coolangatta-Tweed have suffered a dismal start to the 2007 AFL Queensland Season, belted by 115 points in their opening round encounter with premiership favourites Palm Beach Currumbin.
The Blues were comprehensively smashed all over the ground by the powerful Lions outfit at Salk Oval on Saturday Night. The Lions ran out convincing 20.18(138) to 3.5(23) winners.
"We were beaten pretty badly in all positions" Blues coach Scott Lawton said.
"We've just got to be more accountable as a team and individually".
"They (Lions) just had numbers running and we couldn't go with them at any stage."
The Lions dominated in the ruck, giving their onballers first use of the ball. It made life easy for their forward line which kicked 4.6(30) in the first quarter while the Blues were unable to score,
Not much changed in the second term with the Lions mirroring their opening term effort while the Blues landed a dismal two behinds.
Lawton peaded with his players during the half time break, asking for more of an effort but the Lions showed no mercy, piling on another seven goals while the Blues posted their first major of the match.
At the final change the Blues were down by 95 points and although they kicked their two goals, the Lions landed five majors to seal an impressive win.
Despite the thrashing, Lawton was still able to find some positives with ruckman Jason Smith, the nippy Ross O'Brien in a forward pocket and full back Anthony McKee able to hold their heads high.
"Smithy in the ruck was one plater who was terrific for us" Lawton said.
"Down back, we had McKee playing pretty good, considering the amount of times the ball kept coming towards him."
"What we need to do is try and get a key forward. We do really lack one at the club and it would be good just to have a real focus down there in the forward line for us.
"All in all though it could be a tough year for us"
The Blues will host Surfers Paradise on Saturday at Peal Oval, Kirra
