The Coolangatta Blues AFL side have continued their run of poor form after their second heavy loss in as many weeks to Wilston Grange in the Pineapple Hotel Cup on Saturday.
Playing at Wilston Grange’s Hickey Park. The home side amassed 23.14.152 to 6.8.44 point scoreline, leaving Coolangatta coach Scott Lawton with a bitter taste in his mouth.
“We’re just not good enough,” Lawton said. “We’re playing football that’s not going to win us any games.”
With the score blowing out by the end of the second quarter, the Blues never looked like getting back in to the game.
Lacking strength through the midfield, Lawton believes the club’s lack of size is where a lot of the problems stem.
“We’re lacking key position players and our lack of depth is hurting us when we get injuries,” Lawton said.
Matt Boyd’s concussion and Ben Butchart’s ankle injury were the only minor worries from the game.
With the season still young, the bemused coach is confident his players can recover.
“The boys can turn it around,” Lawton said. “They need a harder edge with the ball.”
A hard week’s training looks imminent if the Blues are to come away with a victory when they host fourth-placed Sandgate at Len Peak Oval, Kirra, next weekend.
A win is vital for the Blues who have now slipped out of the top five on the ladder and are level with Surfers Paradise on 14 points.
After a promising start to the season, Lawton is wondering how he can rekindle the fire after two lack-lustre performances.
After seven rounds the table sees Palm Beach on 28 points, Western Magpies 20, Noosa 20, Sandgate 20, Wilston Grange 16, Surfers Paradise 14, Coolangatta 14, Aspley 12, Burleigh 8, Maroochy/Northshore 0, Springwood 0.
