Kenmore Bears AFC has won the 2018 QFA Division 2 Reserves Premiership, winning the biggest game of the season 10.14 (74) to 2.4 (16).
Despite finishing in second place on the ladder, below Bond University at the end of the home and away season the Bears entered the game on the back of winning all three encounters during the season. It didn’t take long for Kenmore to assert themselves in the contest, winning the football and launching multiple entries in the forward fifty.
The Bears booted the opening three goals of the game despite the breeze at Leyshon Park to get out to an early lead. The Bears unabated pressure provided an ability to win the contested ball and with the breeze allowed Kenmore to have a 33-point lead at the main break.
With a comfortable buffer and the wind getting even stronger, the third quarter was a quiet period for both clubs as the back six of the Bears stopped any chances Bond University had in mounting a comeback. Before the Bears used the breeze again and kicked four unanswered majors in the last to run away with the Premiership.
Kenmore had not won a Senior Premiership since 2006, but had won a few U18 Colts flags in 2008 and 2011. Bears President, Terry Mumford said “The pleasing thing about this year, is a lot of the kids that won the flags with the U18 teams are still playing at the club 10 years later so to see them rewarded for effort was fantastic. Bears coach, Matt Ashenden has been amazing coaching both teams and building a great rapport with the players. We will look at replacing some lost experience in the Seniors and really building into next season in the next couple of months.”
