Playing Senior footy from the age of 15 sees you either put your head over the footy and win the respect of your mates or sees you picking up most of your touches out on the wing boundary line - with Cubby Isles it was most definitely the former.
This likeable young man who Dane Gale has taken under his wing as an apprentice carpenter, joined Noosa in 2006 after playing all his junior and senior football at Koroit near Warnambool in Victoria. Whilst he made Rep teams and played for the Geelong Falcons as a 17 year old it was his ability to play at Senior level down South which saw him find his place in the game. A Senior flag at age 16 in 2003 was a definite highlight - although his memory of the celebrations seems quite poor for a lad of only 16 - and he is keen to experience that feeling again with the Tigers.
In his fourth season at Tigerland, Cubby (his dad just called him Cubba when he was a little tacker so dont ask him what it means) initially studied Sports Science at SCU but the call of the tools or maybe the poverty of student life saw him join Dane and with good luck he will be fully qualified in a couple of years.
Cubby also plans to stay around (for at least 3 more years) for a while and hopes to finalize the purchase of some land in the next day or so to build a house which he and partner Jade - a beauty therapist he met on the Sunny Coast - can move into from their current digs in Sunrise Beach.
Whilst he played all sorts of sport as a kid and junior cricket for a while, Cubby reckons between footy and work he doesnt have much time for too much else up here although I am sure the off season provides him the chance to relax and socialise a bit.
When you come to a footy club you look for the guys who stand out as people that everyone has a good word for and who leads by example, and Cubby is certainly a bloke that is popular with all his team mates and people at the club - but just as importantly he is respected by everyone as well.
Cubby we hope that next 3 years at Tigerland turns into 5, then 7, then .....
